The awards, one for $1,500 and one for $750, are presented each spring to students who have contributed to enhancing the university's quality of life over the past year.

Montoya, son of William and Dorothy Montoya of Torreon, N.M., received the $1,500 award. The senior community health education major is a member of the Navajo Tribe and is a student senator representing the College of Health and Social Services.

Smith, daughter of Bryce and Barbara Smith of Mills, N.M., received the $750 award. The junior agricultural economics and business major is a senator and student ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Home Economics.

The awards were established by George and Bernice Roberts of Las Cruces in memory of their sons, Stephen W. and Robert E. Roberts, who were killed in a car wreck in 1978. Stephen graduated from NMSU in 1974 and Robert was an NMSU student at the time of his death.
