NMSU Art Gallery celebrates 30th anniversary

In celebration of the New Mexico State University Art Gallery's 30th anniversary, several pieces of artwork from previously featured artists will be showcased in the gallery's "Permanent Collection Exhibition" May 29-July 31.

reception will open the exhibition from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 6, in Williams Hall on the university campus.

"These works are being taken from storage for the purpose of contemplation and celebration of the gallery's continually expanding collection," Billie Yandell, Art Gallery secretary, said.

Yandell said the collection provides an intimate interaction with art that many would not usually have the opportunity to experience on a college campus.

Artwork by Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, Luis Jimenez, Robert Frank, Linda Conner, Betty Hahn, Claes Oldenburg and Jo Rango are a few that will be contributed to the anniversary collection.

Since 1974, the Art Gallery has served as a medium to showcase local, national and international artists. Artists such as Sol LeWitt and Kozloff & Kozloff, who have established collections in the world's top museums, have showcased their art at the NMSU Art Gallery. The gallery also has provided an opportunity for NMSU students to show their work in the two student exhibits provided every year.

The Art Gallery also will sponsor a Sunday afternoon lecture series in June as part of its 30th anniversary. The lecture series will be held at 2 p.m. June 13, 20 and 27 in Williams Hall, which is near the intersection of Solano Drive and University Avenue.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the door or in advance at the Art Gallery's front desk. All proceeds will be used to support next year's exhibition and educational programming.
