NMSU concrete canoe team places 10th in nation

New Mexico State University's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter concrete canoe team recently placed 10th at the National Concrete Canoe Competition in Washington, D.C.

the second consecutive year the NMSU concrete canoe team has qualified to participate in nationals. The 22 institutions that participated in this year's competition were judged on a presentation, races, aesthetics, technical papers and their final product.

"This year our theme was 'The Phenomenon' and we stained the canoe astral blue," said Ashleigh Wilson, the team's co-captain. "The judges really liked our design because it had really clean lines."

The 10-member team, all undergraduate students, had support from its faculty adviser Kenny Stevens, an engineering technology professor, and graduate student Scott Burns, who did a lot to organize and motivate the group, Wilson said.

The team, which was responsible for securing funds for itself, petitioned local businesses and the Associated Students of NMSU for funds. The student organization provided the team with travel expenses. The civil and geological engineering department and department head Kenneth White were supportive in helping get financial support for the team, Wilson said.
