Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered student resource center to open on NMSU campus

A ribbon cutting and grand opening of a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered student resource center will kick off Sex and Gender Education Month at New Mexico State University at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 1.

emony will take place in the Living and Learning Center on the second floor of Garcia Hall.

"New Mexico State University wants to ensure that all people, all students, know they are welcome here," said Michael V. Martin, president of NMSU. "We are an inclusive university."

Guest speakers at Wednesday's ceremony include Christina Chavez Kelley, NMSU senior assistant to the president, who also will be the master of ceremonies; Ellen Bosman, NMSU adviser to the Stonewall Coalition; and Kelly Siebe, student president of the Stonewall Coalition.

The center will be called the Stonewall Coalition Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning Student Resource Center, said Scott Moore, NMSU dean of students. He said the center will provide literature in all different formats as well as serve as an area where students can gather to support the Stonewall Coalition's initiatives.

The Stonewall Coalition, an NMSU student organization formerly known as Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Friends, takes its name from the infamous 1969 Stonewall riots in New York.

"We've been engaged in many productive meetings with the Stonewall Coalition," Moore said, "and we support the needs of the student organization."
