Fire damages New Mexico State University's Dove Hall

A fire in a basement storage area Saturday morning caused smoke damage throughout New Mexico State University's Dove Hall, said university Fire Chief Darrell Smith.


ll houses the university's advancement offices, including the alumni association, development offices and the NMSU Foundation. The offices will be temporarily relocated next week to vacant student housing areas in the Regents Row complex, said Ben Woods, vice president for human and physical resources.

Smith said the flames were contained to the basement level, but heavy smoke was carried throughout the building.

An automatic alarm was called in at around 7 a.m. Saturday. The Las Cruces and South Valley fire departments assisted in putting out the fire.

State Fire Marshal investigators will help determine the cause of the blaze, Woods said.

Dove Hall, located at the northeast corner of the main campus Horseshoe, was built in l939 and renovated in 1988.
