received his bachelor's degree from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C., and is working on his Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at New Mexico State. He will travel to Hyderabad, India, for nine months to work on his novel about languages.

"My purpose is to do a whole lot of interviews with people from all walks of life in India," he said. With scenes set in India comprising the first half of his novel, he said the detail and dialogue from the interviews will strengthen the realism of his work. "It's just this great opportunity to spend paid time working on writing and interviews," he said.

MacLean said he is grateful to the English department at the university for helping him get the Fulbright award. "The professors helped me out so much," he said. "I couldn't have done it with out the support of my department." One of the professors who assisted MacLean in getting the Fulbright was Robert Boswell.

"He is an extraordinarily talented young writer and all of us who have worked with him feel gratified that his talent has been recognized and rewarded in this fashion," Boswell said. "I expect him to be an exemplary Fulbright scholar."

MacLean teaches undergraduate English classes at New Mexico State and said he wants to continue teaching and writing after his trip to India and his graduation in 2004.

The Institute of International Education awards about 900 Fulbrights a year and provides the recipients plane travel to their country and a monthly stipend for living expenses. Student recipients of the award must have their bachelor's degree and submit their research to selection committees for review. Students choose the country they wish to travel to and a committee from that country decides if the recipient will be a good candidate to study there.
