New Mexico State University journalism student awarded two scholarships

New Mexico State University sophomore Cindy Marchant has been awarded two scholarships totaling $1,500 from the Southern New Mexico Press Club and the New Mexico Press Women.

Marchant, a journalism major who is also minoring in Spanish, received the Joe Smith Journalism Scholarship for $1,000 from the Southern New Mexico Press Club. The scholarship is in memory of newspaper man and teacher Joe Smith. Marchant was required to have at least a 3.0 grade point average, write a cover letter which included her career goals, submit three samples of her work and two letters of recommendation.

Marchant received a $500 scholarship from the New Mexico Press Women.

Marchant is the executive director of media relations for Associated Students of New Mexico State University (ASNMSU), the student government organization at the university and has a grade point average of 4.0. During this summer, she is interning for the feature section of the El Paso Times. After graduating from New Mexico State University she plans on reporting for a few years and then becoming a copy editor.
