Memorial service set for journalism professor

New Mexico State University faculty, staff, students and family and friends will gather for a memorial service in honor of Steven R. Pasternack from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, in the Corbett Center Auditorium.


ack died on June 15 at the age of 54 following a brief illness. He had worked as a professor of journalism and mass communications at NMSU since 1983 and was head of the department from 1994-2002.

Pasternack's areas of research were newspaper design, the legal aspects of mass media and international media. He served as a consultant for governments in Europe and Africa on the writing of press laws, taught at two universities overseas and conducted numerous workshops for journalists around the world. He received two J. William Fulbright fellowships, working in Latvia in 1993 and Rwanda in 2000.

In lieu of flowers, Pasternack's family requests that contributions be sent to the Steven R. Pasternack Memorial Fund, c/o Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, Dept. 3J, P.O. Box 30001, Las Cruces, N.M. 88003. Please specify whether the donation should go to a memorial scholarship fund or to a Rwandan orphans organization that Pasternack supported.
