NMSU's business college celebrates 40 years with first college reunion

New Mexico State University's College of Business Administration and Economics will celebrate its 40th anniversary with the first-ever college reunion at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, in the Traders Plaza, between the business college and the College of Health and Social Services.

Graduates from the past 40 years are expected at the event for food, fun and refreshments. In addition, the CBAE will dedicate the first-floor study lounge at noon in honor of the late Bernice Fite Willis. Her husband, Hank Willis, has donated more than $100,000 to the college. Some of those funds have been used to refurbish the student lounge.

The business college also will honor this year's CBAE distinguished alumnus Linda Volk at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Traders Plaza. Volk, a 1983 NMSU graduate, is the KPMG LLP managing partner in charge of the Rio Grande Business Unit, which includes El Paso and Albuquerque.

In 1964, CBAE opened its doors as an official college after being a department under the College of Arts and Sciences for four decades.

It began with three departments - accounting, economics and general business - and about 10 faculty and a few staff members. The first dean of the college was G.L. Guthrie, who worked for the university from 1925 to 1969.

"We have a short, but rich, history of student and faculty success that we will continue to build on," said Garrey Carruthers, dean of the business college.

During the first four years, the college was housed in different locations around campus including old World War II wooden barracks. The college didn't have a permanent home until Guthrie Hall was constructed in 1968. As the college grew, more space was needed and in 1983 the Business Complex was built.

The college will continue its celebration during the year with events such as a golf tournament, a speaker series and several social get-togethers around the country. Dates and times will be announced as they become available.
