Nirmala Khandan named first holder of John Clark Endowed Professorship at NMSU

> Civil engineering professor Nirmala Khandan has been named the first holder of the John Clark Endowed Professorship at New Mexico State University.

The professorship honors longtime NMSU civil engineering professor John Clark, who was on the faculty from 1953 until his death in 1978. Clark served as head of the Civil Engineering Department from 1961-1962 and director of the Water Resources Research Institute from 1971-1976.

"Nirmala Khandan has the energy, dedication and focus that exemplified John," said Kenneth White, head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Khandan, a member of the NMSU faculty since 1989, has taught five different undergraduate and five different graduate courses. He has published a textbook called Modeling Tools for Environmental Engineers and Scientists as well as more than 50 journal papers. Three of Khandan's papers are among the top 1 percent of all papers published in engineering worldwide in terms of peer citation. He has funding from the National Science Foundation to conduct research in educational materials development.

Khandan received the Patricia Christmore Teaching Award in 1992 and the El Paso Natural Gas Foundation Faculty Award in 1995. He also received the Frank Bromilow Outstanding Research Award in 2001 and the University Research Council Senior Award for Outstanding Creative Scholarly Activity in 2002.
Members of the Civil Engineering Academy raised funds to establish the professorship honoring Clark. Contributors to the endowment fund include Adelmo and Edmund Archuleta, G. Parker Bell, John Burkstaller, David Burstein, Harold and Ed Foreman, Norman Gaume, John Hernandez, Robert Hill, Walter Hines, Frank and Michael Kozeliski, William and Norma Lorang, Samuel and Gloria Maggard, and Bill Wells. These contributions were matched through a Title V grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The John Clark Endowed Professorship is the first endowed professorship in the Department of Civil Engineering at NMSU.

"Endowed chairs and professorships give us the edge we need to move the college forward," said Steve Castillo, dean of the NMSU College of Engineering.
