Public service careers showcased at New Mexico State University

New Mexico State University's Placement and Career Services will host a regional Public Service Career Showcase from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the university's Corbett Center Student Union Ballrooms.

wcase will include federal, state, municipal and non-profit agencies. Agency participants include the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Peace Corps.

"The effectiveness of our government rests with the presence of a vibrant and productive civil service," said Steve Salway, director of the university's placement and career services. "There are valid concerns about the aging and impending retirements of a large sector of this vital workforce."

At the showcase, participants will be able to visit with the various agency representatives to discuss hiring practices and agency employment including full-time, internship and cooperative education opportunities. Salway said co-ops with federal agencies qualify a person for non-competitive conversion to full-time employment upon graduation. He said the armed services will be recruiting for military and civilian service.

The showcase is a response to a "Call to Public Service" by the federal government. New Mexico State University is a member of the Partnership for Public Service, a non-partisan organization dedicated to revitalizing the federal civil service.

"We are pleased to be part of this call to public service effort by bringing service career opportunities to our students and alumni," Salway said. "We want them to have options and to make informed decisions."

The showcase is open to the public and students from all higher education institutions in southern New Mexico have been invited. For more information or a full listing of participating agencies, call (505) 646-4711 or go to www.nmsu.edu/pment.
