NMSU's Army ROTC teams place in Ranger Challenge Competition

New Mexico State University's Army ROTC Female Team placed first and the Male Team placed third in the 2004 12th Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition.

The teams participated in military-oriented events, including a 10K run carrying 40 pounds of equipment, a rope bridge course, a land navigation course, a hand grenade assault competition, an M16 assembly and disassembly competition, a written exam and an Army physical training test.

The NMSU teams were among 32 ROTC teams from universities in New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma that competed in October. The teams competed in three categories: Female, Male and Co-ed.

Members of the Female Team are team captain Melissa Nelson of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Latrisha Calderon of Carlsbad; Jonie Goodrich of Pojoaque; Melissa Najera of El Paso; Vanessa Najera of El Paso; Veronica Owens of Odessa, Tex.; Melissa Magdael of El Paso and Anne-Marie Schwartz of Hobbs. Romero is the coach of the Female Team.

Members of the Male Team are team captain Jeremiah Griego of Los Lunas; Robert Burchett of Hondo; Ross Floersheim of Raton; Gilbert Gonzalez of Anthony, Tex.; William Kelly of Las Cruces; Robert Munoz of Las Cruces; Dustin Segovia of Las Cruces and Ryan Wuerz of Las Cruces. Sgt. Jose Vargas is the coach of the Male Team..
