Grants given to NMSU theater arts assist with outreach, computer software

Several area businesses gave much-needed donations this year to the American Southwest Theatre Company at New Mexico State University.

"These grants make it possible for the theater arts department and ASTC to offer quality theatrical experiences for our audiences, to continue to fund the significant outreach experiences for local school children and to support the various computer applications integrated into the curriculum and production activities," NMSU Theater Arts Department Head Frank Pickard said.

Philips Petroleum donated a $5,000 assistance grant to help ASTC host more than 4,500 elementary school students at showings of "The Snow Queen" and "Henry the Fifth." The grant was used to underwrite tickets and pay for public school instructional guides. The McCune Foundation also made a grant to support the department's Theater for Young Audiences program.

Target Stores and the El Paso Energy Foundation also donated $5,000 each to help offset the expenses of hiring professional guest actors.

Strata, a division of C3D Digital, donated $15,000 in computer software to the department. Strata manufactures a top-of-the-line computer modeling and rendering package that will support the department's computer-aided scenic and lighting design courses.
