Unofficial count shows union representation wins

An unofficial tally of votes in the union election Wednesday, May 31, indicates that New Mexico State Employees have approved an initiative to be represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The votes were counted Wednesday in the Faculty Senate Chambers at Corbett Center. The result: 559 in favor of AFSCME/NMSU; 302 opposed. The Labor Management Relations Board will officially certify the results at its 1 p.m. meeting on June 8.

nt Michael V. Martin said, "The votes in the union election have been counted and the decision by our excellent and dedicated employees has been made.

"Even though the count will not be certified until June 8, it appears that AFSCME will be representing a number of NMSU employees. As we have said throughout this process, we respect our employees, and we worked to keep them fully informed as they made this very important decision. Now, in the same spirit of respect and cooperation, we will work with them through their representatives to ensure a smooth transition to unionization."

Martin expressed appreciation to all who voted, adding, "Let us now look forward to a great summer and a successful 2006-07 academic year."
