Statement regarding death of NMSU student

We are deeply saddened by the news that NMSU student Christopher Berry died today due to apparent alcohol poisoning following off-campus celebrations of his 22nd birthday.

pus community is in a state of grief. The death of a student represents a loss not only to a family, but to the university, the surrounding community and the nation as a whole. Our hearts are with his parents, his loved ones and his friends.

Berry, a junior anthropology major, was from Maxwell, N.M. The NMSU Student Services office and Counseling Center have been offering support to Berry's family and friends. The office is open to anyone in need of counseling in the wake of this tragedy.

Use of alcohol among college students has become a national issue. NMSU, along with universities across the country, continues to work with students, parents, faculty, community and business leaders on what has become a national epidemic.

A memorial service for Berry will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Newman Center, a member of the Interfaith Council affiliated with New Mexico State University. The center is located at 2615 S. Solano near the university.
