Martha Mitchell named head of Chemical Engineering Department at NMSU

Martha Mitchell, an associate professor of chemical engineering, has been named head of the Chemical Engineering Department at New Mexico State University. She is the first woman to become a department head in the NMSU College of Engineering.

l earned her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. She has been a member of the NMSU faculty since 1996, and has been serving as interim department head since August 2004.

"We are very pleased to have Dr. Mitchell leading the Chemical Engineering Department. She has excellent credentials in both teaching and research and has demonstrated her leadership skills during her tenure as the interim department head," said Steve Castillo, dean of the College of Engineering.

Mitchell's research involves molecular-scale computer modeling of processes important to chemical industries such as hydrogen separation using membranes. She is a registered professional engineer.

Mitchell and her husband, Shaun Cooper, live in Las Cruces.
