NMSU awarded $574,000 for bridge inspection program

The College of Engineering at New Mexico State University has been awarded a $574,000 grant by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) for the New Mexico Bridge Inspection Program.

rrently provides routine bridge inspections and evaluations to the NMDOT for most of the interstate bridges in New Mexico. With the new contract, NMSU will be able to add an inspection team and employ six co-op students each year. The experience will give students an opportunity to evaluate transportation as a potential career while getting an in-depth look at different types of structural systems.

The contract also will allow NMSU to use quick-time virtual reality for bridges, an inspection technology that allows researchers to use computers equipped with panoramic and movie-creation programs to document the physical conditions of bridges.
