New music director for NMSU and Las Cruces Symphony

Lonnie Klein, music director and conductor of the University of Evansville-Indiana Symphony Orchestra, will take the position of music director and conductor of the Las Cruces Symphony at New Mexico State University and the Chamber Players de Las Cruces starting with the 1999-2000 concert season.

Klein has been with the Evansville symphony since 1989. The orchestra performed more than 68 concerts and 155 works under his direction. To help expand the students' musical experience, he engaged numerous professional artists to solo with the orchestra.

"I'm excited about the quality of playing at NMSU," Klein said. "I'd like to continue with the guest artist series and possibly create a summer series."

Klein is an accomplished clarinetist and has held the position of principal clarinet with the Jackson, Miss., symphony and the Paducah, Ky., symphony orchestras. He also is a member of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.

Klein received a bachelor's degree in music education from Murray State University, a master's degree from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.
