Mexican activist to speak at NMSU July 19

The Center for Latin American and Border Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico State University are sponsoring "Social Movements in Chiapas" at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 19 at the Nason House at 1200 University Avenue.


ta Pérez Pérez, a Tzotzil-Maya weaver and community activist, will talk about her experience in the social justice movement in Chiapas, Mexico. She has organized weaving, baking and general store cooperatives, and supports the Zapatista Movement's efforts to bring greater autonomy and human rights to indigenous people.

Weavings from cooperatives in Chiapas will be sold before and after the talk. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (505) 646-6814.
