Student Support Services TRIO program receives funding

New Mexico State University's Student Support Services has been awarded a U.S. Department of Education grant to continue its program through August 2010. The grant will be $380,264 for the 2006-07 school year and will serve 350 first-generation, low-income students and/or students with disabilities.


l of Student Support Services, a TRIO Program, is to provide academic services that lead to students remaining in school through college graduation. The program has been funded at NMSU since 1971 and currently has an 84 percent retention rate. The current grant will continue through August 2006.

Students must apply for the program and meet the eligibility criteria - first-generation, low-income, and/or learning/physically disabled, with an academic need - to be selected as participants. Program services are free to participants and include personal peer mentors who assist with navigating the university system, personal certified tutors who are departmentally approved, laptop computer loans, book loans, tickets for cultural events and much more.
