New Mexico State University presents Gardiner Lecture

Galison will speak at the university's annual Gardiner Lecture at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the Physical Science Laboratory Auditorium.

Galison, whose lecture is entitled "Einstein's Clocks, Poincare's Maps," will be speaking in honor of the Albert Einstein Centennial celebration. He is a Mallinckrodt Professor of the History of Science and Physics at Harvard University.

The Gardiner Lecture is funded by the George W. Gardiner Memorial Lecture Endowment. The yearly lecture series is a tribute to George W. Gardiner, who came to NMSU in 1934 and developed the university physics department. Gardiner founded the Physical Sciences Laboratory at NMSU in 1946 and served as its first director.

Scientists and physicists all over the world still celebrate Einstein and his achievements in the scientific world.

A seminar at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Conroy Honors Center, also will focus on the topic "Images of Objectivity." Galison will present his expertise on the theory of relativity and Einstein.

Galison's lecture is based on his newest book "Einstein's Clocks, Pioncare's Maps," which begins the study of theory. It focuses on the ways the theory of relativity involves technology, philosophy and physics.

Galison is an expert on the history of physics and has written several books on the interaction between experimentation, instrumentation and theory in 20th century physics. Some of his most famous works include "How Experiments End," "The Architecture of Science" and "Image and Logic: A Material Culture of Microphysics."
