NMSU campus observatory to hold open house during Homecoming

New Mexico State University's Department of Astronomy will hold an open house at the campus observatory at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, as part of the NMSU College of Arts and Sciences Homecoming 2005 activities.


permitting, the following night-sky wonders will be observed: the planet Venus (early in the evening), the planet Mars (later in the evening), the Andromeda galaxy (M31) and the Wild Duck star cluster (M11).

A slide show about weather on Mars will be presented.

The evening will be hosted by astronomy graduate students Melinda Kahre, Jillian Bornak and Cat Wu and faculty member Jim Murphy.

The Tombaugh Observatory is located east of Williams Avenue, near the running track. Admission is free and children are welcome. The domes are not heated, so dress according to the weather.
