Journalism's Steve Pasternack remembered

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications dedicated a portion of Milton Hall to the late Steve Pasternack as part of its celebration of 40 years of journalism at New Mexico State University.

ve Pasternack Reading and Research Room was dedicated Wednesday during a university gathering on the Milton Hall patio. The room contains a library and computers.

"We want students to use this room," said Frank Thayer, head of the journalism department in announcing the dedication. "It's a quiet place to study and do research."

Pasternack was a professor at the university beginning in 1983 and was head of the department from 1994 to 2002. He died unexpectedly June 15, 2004, from a brief illness after returning from Rwanda.

At a Friday luncheon, the department will honor another individual, distinguished alumnus James Manatt, a Roswell businessman and former NMSU regent.

NMSU has the only accredited journalism department in the state. Pasternack led the effort to achieve this education milestone, Thayer said.
