New Mexico State University promotes School Psychology Awareness Week

New Mexico State University's School Psychology Program (SPP) will promote School Psychology Awareness Week Nov. 7-11 through a series of themed receptions, presentations and philanthropic activities.


e we have the only school psychology training program in the state of New Mexico, School Psychology Awareness Week is meant to inform people about what we do," said Todd A. Savage, assistant professor in the department of counseling and educational psychology, a part of the NMSU College of Education.

Three themed receptions will be held in the lobby/patio areas of O'Donnell Hall spotlighting relationships, cultural awareness and de-stressing and assessment. A series of presentations on "What is a School Psychologist?" will be held throughout the campus and the community. SPP also is sponsoring a winter gear drive to collect jackets, coats and other gear that will be distributed to local charities.

The "Relationships" reception on Wednesday, Nov. 9, will highlight the roles and relationships of the school psychologist. The "Cultural Awareness" reception on Thursday, Nov. 10, spotlights the roles and responsibilities the school psychologist has in being culturally sensitive and responsive to diversity. "De-Stressing and Assessment," on Friday, Nov.11, will focus on the roles of school psychologists in terms of assessment and intervention.

All receptions will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and will feature free food and door prizes. During the "De-Stressing and Assessment" reception, free massages will be offered.

The winter gear drive will be continue through November. Bins for donations will be placed in the lobby of O'Donnell Hall.

"These events are all student-driven and all sorts of businesses are helping out, which makes it all the more special," Savage said.

School Psychology Awareness Week is sponsored yearly by the National Association of School Psychologists. Supporters of the local activities are Casablanca restaurant, Copy Machine Inc., Dee Sharp Christian Music Shop, Hollywood Video, International House of Pancakes, Lujan's Bakery, Massage Therapy Training Institute, Papa John's Pizza, Pepsi, Pit Stop, Seeking Your Health, Sisbarro, Wal-Mart, William Mattiace (mayor), Tom Youngs and Wingstop.
