NMSU campus observatory to hold open house Dec. 9

New Mexico State University's Department of Astronomy will hold an open house at the campus observatory starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.


permitting, participants will observe the planet Mars; the Orion Nebula, a star-forming region and huge gas cloud; the Ring Nebula, a dying star and expelled gas; Pleiades, an open cluster of stars known as the "seven sisters"; and the Globular Cluster M15, which contains millions of stars.

Astronomy personnel on hand will be faculty member Chris Churchill and graduate students James Stockton, Ryan Campbell and Paul Strycker.

The Tombaugh Observatory is located east of Williams Avenue, near the running track. Admission is free and children are welcome. The domes are not heated, so dress according to the weather.
