Physical Science Laboratory appointments announced

Enedina Vazquez and Steve Hottman have been appointed deputy directors of the Physical Science Laboratory at New Mexico State University.

Jay Jordan, dean and director of the PSL, announced a restructuring of PSL's executive leadership structure as part of a continuing strategy to more closely align the lab with the university's academic mission.

Vazquez, associate dean of NMSU's Graduate School since 2003, will be responsible for university and academic affairs and will lead strategic planning at PSL, Jordan said. He said the position is equivalent to an associate dean of academic affairs in an academic college.

Hottman, who has been a senior technical director, will lead PSL's research and development activities. The position is equivalent to an associate dean of research in an academic college, Jordan said.

In other administrative changes, Ermelinda Quintela, senior administrative director, will be the functional equivalent of a college research center director, responsible for contract and financial management and related activities. Regina Galvan, business operations specialist, will be PSL's development and public relations officer.

"This is a transitional structure as we reorganize along the lines of a multidisciplinary college and align PSL with the university's Living the Vision strategic plan," Jordan said. The administrative changes were effective Aug. 1.

Vazquez brings a strong academic background to the position of deputy director, which will be helpful as PSL develops closer ties to the academic colleges through joint appointments and interdisciplinary programs, Jordan said. Before becoming associate dean of the Graduate School, she was associate director of NMSU's Honors Program, now the Honors College. She has a Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Iowa and is a tenured professor in the Counseling and Educational Psychology Department.

Hottman, who joined PSL in 1998 as a technical director, has more than 25 years of experience developing advanced products and systems and leading research and development activities. He has managed PSL's scientific balloon contract with NASA, its unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) activities and other major programs. Hottman has a master's degree in industrial engineering from Texas A&M and is working on a Ph.D. in engineering psychology at NMSU.

Quintela joined PSL in November 2005. Previously, she was the director of gift and foundation accounting and the controller for the NMSU Foundation. She is a certified public accountant and has 20 years of experience in public and private financial management.

Galvan has been a member of PSL's human resources staff since 1990 and has informally supported PSL alumni relations during that time. In addition to her advancement/development responsibilities, she will continue in her role as human resources liaison.
