Theoretical physicist to be featured during Physics Colloquium Series at NMSU

Rajan Gupta, of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, will speak at 4 p.m. Friday, March 16, in Gardener Hall Room 229 on the New Mexico State University main campus.

The lecture, "Energy for all in the 21st Century," is part of the Department of Physics Colloquium Series.

"Energy is the key to development and is the basis of modern technology societies," Gupta said. "The urgent question today is: 'What energy portfolio will provide affordable clean energy to eight billion people?' This talk will examine the current challenges and the technological breakthroughs required to realize the potential of fossil fuels, nuclear energy and alternates (hydro, solar, wind). I will make the case for why it is in the U.S.'s interest to lead the efforts to develop and deploy cheap clean energy for all."

Other topics discussed during the colloquium include "Computational Physics in the Deep Earth," "The Dynamics of Fast Moving Ice Streams in Antarctica" and "Physics at the Speed of Light."

Refreshments will be served before the colloquium at 3:45 p.m. For more information on the lecture or the colloquium, call (505) 646-1811.
