NMSU will honor professor with room dedication

The New Mexico State University Computer Science Department will dedicate the Frank Harary Memorial Room at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, in the Science Hall Room 107.

Frank Harary was a distinguished professor in the NMSU Computer Science Department from 1987 until he passed away in 2005. Harary was widely recognized as one of the pioneers of modern graph theory, a discipline of mathematics he helped found, popularize and revitalize.

Mariette Mealor, the department secretary for Computer Science, said Harary's old office, Science Hall Room 154, will be dedicated in his memory as a research and study area for students and scholars. The room still has all of his books, including those he co-authored, as well as his framed degrees on the walls.

The dedication event will begin with a lecture by Lowell Beineke, Harary's fifth Ph.D. student and professor of mathematics at the Indiana University-Purdue University combined campus in Fort Wayne, Ind. Beineke will discuss "Graphs on Surfaces" and "Graphs and Games," two areas of graph theory he said were dear to Harary.

There also will be a reception at 5 p.m. in Science Hall Room 124.

Harary was born on March 11, 1921, in New York City. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from Brooklyn College in 1941 and 1945, and then his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley in 1948. He held a faculty position in mathematics at the University of Michigan from 1948 to 1986 where he also was a member of the Institute of Social Research from 1950 to 1982.

Harary was the author of numerous books and articles. His 1969 book "Graph Theory" is a modern classic that helped define, develop, direct and shape the field of modern graph theory. It is one of the most cited and influential scholarly works in modern scientific literature. He delivered more than a thousand conference presentations and invited lectures in more than 87 countries in four different languages.
