Director of bands at New Mexico State University named Music Educator of the Year

The New Mexico Music Educators Association (NMMEA) recently selected Ken Van Winkle, New Mexico State University's director of bands and associate music professor, as this year's Music Educator of the Year.

Van Winkle, of Alamogordo, has taught music at New Mexico State for 18 years. He is co-director of the New Mexico State Pride Marching Band and director of Symphonic Winds. He also teaches conducting and plays in the faculty brass quintet at New Mexico State.

Van Winkle is a member of NMMEA, in which he has served as president and vice president in the past. He will receive the award at the NMMEA's annual All-State Conference Business and Awards Luncheon Jan. 10, 2003, at the University of New Mexico.

Van Winkle has a bachelor's degree in music education from West Texas A&M, a master's degree in trumpet performance from the University of North Texas and a doctorate in trumpet performance from the University of Oregon.
