Information technology chief appointed

Michael Hites, chief technology officer at the Illinois Institute of Technology, has accepted a position as head of information technology at New Mexico State University.



Michael Hites has been appointed chief information officer/vice provost for information and technological services at NMSU, effective Feb. 3, 2003.

Hites' appointment as chief information officer/vice provost for information and technological services is effective Feb. 3, 2003, said Provost William Flores.

"Dr. Hites has an excellent combination of technical skills and leadership qualities that added with his experience and vision will help NMSU develop and guide its strategic plan for technology needs," Flores said.

The new executive-level position reports to the provost and is the chief individual responsible for communication technology and computing needs at the university. The position provides vision and leadership in the development, integration and operation of information technology for the innovative support of instruction, research, public service and administrative operations, including distance education, management information systems, budget and financial records.

Hites has similar responsibilities in his current role at the Illinois Institute of Technology, which he has held since May 2000. He previously was director of computing and network services at IIT from 1998 to 2000.

He has a Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from IIT, a master's in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona.
