NMSU registration days set for May 3-5 at Albuquerque Center

ALBUQUERQUE - Are you a high school senior who wants to attend New Mexico State University next year, but you don't want to drive all the way to Las Cruces to register?

You don't have to. NMSU's New Student Programs in the Office of Student Success is hosting three registration days in Albuquerque, May 3-5, at NMSU's Albuquerque Center. The center is located at 2444 Louisiana Blvd. NE, on the first floor of the Compass Bank building east of Coronado Mall.

"This is an opportunity for students from Albuquerque, northern New Mexico and southern Colorado to meet with their academic advisers, register for classes, confirm housing reservations, check on financial aid status and reserve their spot for Aggie Welcome Week," said Valerie Pickett, director of student marketing and transition programs. "It's a one-stop shop without having to make the three-or-more-hour drive."

Advisers will be receiving appointments from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 3-4, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5.

Last year 220 future students took advantage of the registration in Albuquerque; this year school admissions staff is expecting 300 to participate.

The New Student Programs are intended to help students begin their college career on the right path. During the programs, students receive answers to questions, learn about available resources and discover what NMSU has to offer.

"The programs are divided into two different activities - registration and orientation," said Pickett. "Both are equally important, but can be overwhelming when held at the same time."

During the New Student Registration, the future student registers for classes, takes the math placement exam, applies for housing and dining services, orders a student ID and makes payment arrangements for upcoming semesters.

NMSU applicants wishing to participate in the Albuquerque event must register, either online or by calling (505) 646-5089, to reserve an appointment time. Future students, who do not attend the event in Albuquerque, may attend one of six registration sessions to be held during the summer in Las Cruces. Once the student has registered there are two different orientation programs held each fall. Aggie Welcome Week is an extensive orientation program for traditional new and transfer students. Pete's Fair is specifically designed for non-traditional students returning to school after time away. These programs are held in August on NMSU's campus.

The orientation programs and special registration days are part of NMSU's continuing outreach efforts to help educate and improve the lives of people in New Mexico.
