NMSU art students receive recognition for successful student exhibit

The New Mexico State University Art Gallery awarded $3,260 in awards during the Student Art Exhibition reception in March.

The awards were chosen by visiting juror Cathy Wright. The student to receive the highest recognition was Cindy Wiseman. She is the winner of the $1,000 Waded Cruzado-Salas, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences Best of Show award. Meg Freyermuth was awarded a $500 Babey Encourage Young Artists award. Another award winning student was Jade Boswell, with a $300 University Art Gallery award. Nick Naughton received a $300 Student Art Store materials award, while Rosa Noyola won a $300 Friends of University Art Gallery award.

The works of 68 students were featured in the Student Art Exhibition. Various media forms including paintings, prints, photos, graphics, mixed media sculptures, ceramics, jewelry and metal work were part of the exhibit.

Other student winners included Vincente Romero; Mike Phillips; Jennifer Higginbotham; Elizabeth Hillman; Jon Ashcroft; Joslin Torres; Jesse Reinhard; Claudia Jones; Rafael Torres; Dianne Frank; Rennae Trapp; Cheryl Acosta; Pat Reece; and Isadora Stowe.

Award and gift sponsors were Roberto's Mexican Restaurant; La Posta de Mesilla; Galeri Azul; Spirit Winds & E-Street Gallery; June Smoot; New Mexico Studio of Design; the Potter's Guild of Las Cruces; Elizabeth Fisher Ceramics; Camille Rendal; and 2-D grad.

Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The university gallery is closed Sundays, Mondays and on university holidays.
