NOW will co-sponsor student essay contest

The New Mexico State University Women's Studies Program is partnering with the Mesilla Valley Chapter of the National Organization (NOW) for Women to sponsor an essay contest open to any NMSU or Dona Ana Community College students.

Participants will write a five-page essay on one of the following topics: immigration reform and legalization laws, family separation/reunification, equal pay, enforcement of existing labor laws, violence against women and domestic violence, access to healthcare for women or children of immigrants and access to education.

Participants can choose to write about why the issue is important to feminist women today or how the issue has affected the participant or someone they know.

The essay contest will be split into undergraduate and graduate student categories. The first and second place prize for each category will be $150 and $50 respectively.

Essay submissions must be post-marked by Feb. 15, 2008, and sent to Mesilla Valley NOW, 1890 Myrtle Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88001. Submissions become property of Mesilla Valley NOW and will not be returned.

The winners of the contest will be announced in March 2008. Winners may be asked to submit their essay in electronic form.
