Legal seminar for school administrators to be held

The Southwest New Mexico Legal Seminar for school administrators will be held Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum.

The seminar is titled "Legal Issues for the School Building Administrator," and will be presented by the Cuddy Law Firm. It is co-sponsored by Las Cruces Public Schools, the New Mexico State University College of Education and the Alliance for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.

Area superintendents, central office administrators, principals and school board members are expected to attend the event.

"School administrators must be aware of school law, but these laws can change. The purpose of the seminar is to update the administrators on how to deal with current legal issues and concerns," said Eric J. Lopez, associate professor and NMSU's Stan Fulton Endowed Chair for the Improvement of Border and Rural Schools.

The seminar will cover the topics "Legal Issues in Student Discipline," "4th Amendment: Student Search and Seizure," "1st Amendment: Student Expression" and "Conducting an Effective Investigation."
