NMSU Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance changes name

The New Mexico State University department formerly known as Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance has changed its name to the Department of Human Performance, Dance and Recreation.

Peter Maud, the department head, said the reason the department chose to change its name was to accommodate the kinesiology program, which has been the department's fastest growing program in the past five years. The Department of Human Performance, Dance and Recreation also offers degree programs in athletic training education, dance and physical education.

Maud said the department's name change will make it easier for prospective students to find the kinesiology program at NMSU.

"The department has grown and will continue to grow," Maud said. "The reputation of the department also has grown. We have more respect and credibility now than several years ago."

Maud said he would have liked to have changed the name five years ago, when he became the department head, but the process did not start until about two years ago. The department decided the new name in Spring 2006, then the decision had to go through a variety of committees and councils before NMSU President Michael Martin sent it to the Board of Regents, where it was finally approved this summer.
