Groundbreaking political strategist to be next Arts and Sciences speaker series guest

A groundbreaking political strategist will be the next guest in the New Mexico State University College of Arts and Sciences' speaker series.

Mary Hughes, co-founder and president of Staton Hughes, a strategic communications and political consulting firm in San Francisco, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Creative Media Institute's Digital Media Theatre in Milton Hall. Her talk, "Women in the '08 Elections: Perception vs. Progress," is open to the public.

Hughes is no stranger to "firsts." She has directed campaigns and advised several groundbreaking elected officials including:

Nancy Pelosi - the first woman in U.S. history to lead her party in Congress.
Delaine Eastin - the first woman superintendent of schools in California.
Ron Gonzales - the first Latino mayor of San Jose, Calif., and
Donna Hitchens - the first open lesbian judge elected in the nation.
Hughes also has helped Gabrielle Giffords of Tucson, Ariz., win a seat in Congress, has served as executive director of the California Democratic Party, and has published essays, opinion/editorials, articles and book reviews related to American politics.
