Holiday basketball tournament comes to Pan American Center

For the fourth consecutive year, the Memorial Medical Center Holiday Hoop-La basketball tournament will showcase 16 of the Southwest's best high school basketball teams Dec. 27 through 29. All games will be played in the Pan American Center on the New Mexico State University campus.

Eight boys' teams and eight girls' teams will compete for championship trophies in each division. Participating boys' teams will come from Onate, Deming, Bowie, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, Manzano, Mayfield and Del Valle high schools. The girls' teams will come from Las Cruces, Andress, Los Alamos, Hanks, Onate, Burges, Socorro and Mayfield high schools.

"Memorial Medical Center is pleased to be the title sponsor of this annual high school holiday basketball tournament," said Paul Herzog, chief executive officer of the hospital. "The teams that participate demonstrate all that is positive with today's youth. Please take time to stop by the Pan American Center and show your support for our local teams."

"This event provides a fantastic opportunity for all of our visiting teams to visit the city of Las Cruces and for all of the student-athletes to play in a university arena setting at the NMSU Pan American Center," added Ernie Viramontes, athletics director of the Las Cruces Public Schools. "It also offers a great chance for families and friends to spend time together during the holidays supporting their favorite teams."

The boys' tournament will begin with the following games:

-Game 1: Onate vs. Deming, Dec. 27, 10:30 a.m.

-Game 2: Bowie vs. Carlsbad, Dec. 27, 1:30 p.m.

-Game 3: Las Cruces vs. Manzano, Dec. 27, 5 p.m.

-Game 4: Mayfield vs. Del Valle, Dec. 27, 8 p.m.

The girls' tournament will start with the following games:

-Game 1: Las Cruces vs. Andress, Dec. 27, 9 a.m.

-Game 2: Los Alamos vs. Hanks, Dec. 27, noon

-Game 3: Onate vs. Burges, Dec. 27, 3:30 p.m.

-Game 4: Socorro vs. Mayfield, Dec. 27, 6:30 p.m.

Ticket prices are as follows:

-$4 for a single entry per day. This ticket allows a person to enter the Pan American Center and stay for an unlimited number of games that day. However, if the person leaves, another ticket must be bought.

-$10 for a single day pass. This ticket allows the ticket holder to enter and leave the Pan American Center an unlimited number of times during that day's competition.

-$25 for an all-tournament pass. This ticket allows the ticket holder to enter and leave the Pan American Center an unlimited number of times during all days of competition.
