Mountain climber to speak at NMSU

Mountain climber Tonya Riggs will present "Live the Life You Dream: From Everest to Annapurna" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the New Mexico State University Corbett Center Auditorium.

After spending 12 years in a successful career in "corporate America" Riggs discovered a passion for mountain climbing. Since then, she has made climbing pilgrimages to the Peruvian Andes, the Dolomites of Northern Italy and the Central Alps of Europe.

On May 18, 2006, Riggs reached the summit of Mount Everest, the universal symbol for mountain adventure.

"Riggs will discuss how she confronted her own doubts and fears, as well as the misgivings of those around her," said Ben Gabriel, assistant director of recreational sports at NMSU. "She will talk about what she did to change her life and follow her dream to stand on top of the world."

Riggs is a member of the Everest Peace Project, a group of mountain climbers from different faiths and cultures who attempt to promote a global community that strives for peace and compassion by participating in multi-cultural "Peace Climbs" on mountains around the world.

The discussion is free and open to the public. For more information call Ben Gabriel at (505) 646-4746.
