NMSU Theater Arts and ASTC present A Walk in the Desert

New Mexico State University's Department of Theatre Arts in collaboration with the American Southwest Theatre Company will present "A Walk in the Desert" by Ruth Cantrell Oct. 26 and 27 at the Hershel Zohn Theatre on the NMSU campus.

"A Walk in the Desert" tells the story of a young girl who learns to value the beauty and tradition of the American Southwest. Various Southwestern creatures use distinct forms of music and dance to make their messages clear to the main character and to the audience.

"Each character has a distinct dicho and dance," said Cantrell, professor and academic head of the theater department.

"Lizards and roadrunners doing the merengue, coyotes doing the tango, and tumbleweeds dancing the salsa are just a few of the dance sequences that help to tell the story," said Debra Knapp, choreographer and head of the NMSU Dance Program.

"A Walk in the Desert" showcases the combined talents of many area artists. Flamenco guitarist Jake Mossman worked with local composer Justin Raines to provide music for the production. NMSU alumnus Julio Ortiz helped to translate the story. NMSU Theatre Arts faculty members Jim Billings designed scenery and lights, Deb Brunson created costumes, and David Hereford provided props.

"Choreographing this play has been so fun. Fitting the different musical and dance styles to Southwestern animals and flora has been a creative challenge," Knapp said.

A Walk in the Desert is directed by NMSU student Rebecca MacCallum. Featured performers cast from the NMSU Dance Program include Lisette Tarin, Alexandra Martinez, Shawna Angulo, Joe Putman, Robert Clark, Carlos Saucedo, Tyesha Johnson, Mariel Gastelum, Shelby Kartchner, Niki Lemmon, Anika Jones, Delia Shattuck, Marty Dorado, Casey Russell, Kristie Medina, Sean Salvador, Vanessa Campos, Susan Kelly, Angel Favela, Sarah Navarrete, Candace Williams, Rachel Diehl, Alyx Sanchez, Ryan Romero, Allison Martinez, Sarah Alvarez, Dee Dee Harvey and Candice Harris.
