ASNMSU hosts 'The Big Event' to reach out to the community

The Associated Students of New Mexico State University will kickoff their fifth annual community service project, "The Big Event," at 8:30 a.m. March 15 at the Corbett Center Student Union outdoor stage.

"The Big Event" is an annual off-campus university community service project started in the 1970s by Texas A&M University. There are 75 universities participating in "The Big Event" during the spring semester.

"Normally, about 400 students go out into the community and show our appreciation for Las Cruces by doing whatever work needs to be done," said Jessica Bedford, executive director of community outreach at ASNMSU.

Bedford said last year was the first time "The Big Event" was open to Las Cruces residents, while in previous years it had been for non-profit organizations.

"We decided we needed to reach more people," Bedford said.

Community service jobs include sorting clothes at the Salvation Army, yard work for Safe Haven Animal Shelter and various non-hazardous jobs for residents.

Bedford said their goal was to reach as many Las Cruces residents as possible and expand "The Big Event" into a recognizable function for NMSU students.

"Community service is important, not only for school but it helps when you're looking for a job," Bedford said. "Employers look at what you do for the community."

Bedford encourages any students or student organizations that would like to participate to sign up. The sign up deadline is March 3. Application forms can print from "The Big Event" Web site and brought to the ASNMSU office.

Participants should wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty. Food will be provided to participants. A raffle also will be held and will include gift cards from various Las Cruces stores and restaurants.
