Lavoie to deliver presentations on learning disabilities and special education Jan. 27

Visiting lecturer Rick Lavoie will give two presentations on learning disabilities and special education at New Mexico State University's Corbett Center Ballrooms Monday, Jan 27.

a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Learning Disabilities Association, will present on topics directed towards general and special educators, parents, administrators, university students and faculty.

At 2 p.m., the first workshop, "Life in the Jungle," will explore the realities, myths and frustrations about the education of students with learning disabilities. Following the workshop will be a dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with guest speakers Dean Robert Moulton of the College of Education and Provost William Flores.

At 7 p.m., Lavoie will give the second presentation, "Tales from the Road," discussing the state of special education and the impact it has had on people he has encountered during his travels.

Elissa Poel, a professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at New Mexico State, said Lavoie's presentations will help bring awareness to the work being implemented in the field and present teaching and social techniques for those involved with individuals with learning disabilities. Poel said it is a chance to work with Lavoie who is one of the leaders in the field and whose materials are used in classes at the university.

Lavoie has worked with children with special needs since 1972 and has three degrees in special education. He has served as an adjunct professor and visiting lecturer at several universities including Syracuse, Harvard, Gallaudet and Georgetown. He has made television appearances on the CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America and the ABC Evening News. He is a consultant on learning disabilities to agencies and organizations including the Public Broadcasting Service, the New York Times, the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the Girl Scouts of America.
