La Sociedad para las Artes at New Mexico State presents poetry reading

Poets Kathleene West and Katherine McCord will be featured in La Sociedad para las Artes' Spring 2003 Visiting Author Series at New Mexico State University Friday, Jan. 24.

West is a professor of poetry in the Master of Fine Arts program at New Mexico State and the poetry editor for "Puerto del Sol," a literary magazine based in Las Cruces which encourages an eclectic taste in poetry and fiction with careful attention to craft. Her books include "The Armadillo on the Rug and Other Tales," a book of short fiction, and eight books of poetry. Her latest work, "Third World Romance," is a bi-lingual book translated by author Jesus J. Barquet and others. She has lived in Iceland on a Fulbright Fellowship and received her doctorate in English and Icelandic Studies from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

McCord's poetry has been published in magazines such as "American Writing," "Great River Review," "Parting Gifts," "Poet Lore," "The Portland Review," "Visions International," "Westview," "Puerto del Sol" and "Aura Literary/Arts Review." Her book of poetry, "Island," was published by March Street Press in 2002. She received her Master of Arts in creative writing from New Mexico State and Master of Fine Arts from Warren Wilson College. She teaches creative writing at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

The reading is free and open to the public. Non-perishable food donations for Casa de Peregrinos will be accepted at the door.
