NMSU Theatre Arts and ASTC present reading of new play 'On Clarion'

The New Mexico State University Department of Theatre Arts and the American Southwest Theatre Company will present a reading of a new play "On Clarion" at 8 p.m. April 11 and 12 in the Hershel Zohn Theatre.

The readings are part of the new High Desert Play Development program, which was created two years ago. The program solicits scripts from emerging playwrights of national renown.

A week-long workshop for Lydia Stryk's script will be held along with the readings. After each reading, audiences will be asked to respond to the play as a means for Stryk to continue the play's development.

"On Clarion" is set in 1954, the super-bomb era, and follows a charismatic woman who gathers a group around her to take the ultimate journey, off the face of the planet. Loosely based on a true story, this dark UFO comedy asks what we are capable of when fear and destruction lead to yearning for a better place.

Stryk has written more than 10 full-length plays that have been produced by various theater companies around the U.S. and Germany. She splits her time between Berlin, Germany, and New York City as a playwright, freelance editor and a teacher of writing workshops.

Tom Smith, NMSU theatre arts director and ASTC resident director, will direct the reading with dramaturgy by William Storm. The cast will include Seleena Hoban, Rebecca MacCallum, Sean Dolan, Chris Rambicure, Kari Bahmer, Josh Tafoya and Stephen Markham Jr.

"On Clarion" will be considered for full production in the NMSU Theatre Arts' High Desert slot Feb. 20 to March 8, 2009.
