NMSU American Indian Week to be held

The 44th Annual American Indian Week will be held March 31-April 6 at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

"The week is an opportunity to showcase not only culture and traditions but also contemporary issues. It gives a preview of native culture and traditions and promotes awareness and education," said Maggie George, director of NMSU's American Indian Program.

Cultural events such as a pueblo throw, which is a traditional throwing of small gifts; traditional Native American dancing and a Miss Native American NMSU pageant will be held throughout the week. An Arts and Crafts Expo also will be held April 4-5 from 2-8 p.m.

A basketball tournament will begin Friday, April 4, and continue through Sunday in the Activity Center.

Charlene Teters will speak on Tuesday, April 1, in the Hardman Hall Auditorium from 7-9 p.m. Teters is an artist, activist and lecturer, and also is a founding board member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media.

All events are open to the public at no charge.
