Fiestas Latinas 2008

Fiestas Latinas (formerly "Chicano Week") will be hosted by several Hispanic student organizations and ASNMSU at New Mexico State University from April 10-19.

The celebration intends to involve the campus in a celebration of Hispanic culture. This year's events include an outdoor movie, a speaker, a local comedian, a soccer and softball tournament and a dance with free dance lessons.

"Some of these events have been a tradition for many years," said Laura Gutierrez Spencer, director of Chicano Programs at NMSU.

The events for Fiestas Latinas include:

?"Born in East L.A." will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Corbett Center Outdoor Stage by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Free snacks will be given. The movie is for mature audiences only.

?Comedy night, presented by Mexican American Engineers and Scientists, will feature George Jimenez, a comedian from El Paso at 7 p.m. Friday, April 11. Free food will be served at the beginning of the event outside of Hardman Hall. The event, intended for mature audiences only, will be in Hardman Hall Room 208.

?A soccer tournament will be hosted by the College Assistance Migrant Program at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12. The tournament will take place at the Activity Center Fields and is open only to NMSU full-time students.

?Guest speaker Ernesto Vigil will speak about identity themes and his experience as a member and high-ranking official in the Crusade for Justice. Vigil is author of "The Crusade for Justice: Chicano Militancy and the Government's War on Dissent." The event is hosted by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano/a de Atzlan (MEChA) and will be at the Corbett Center Auditorium at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 17. Free food will be available and a book signing will follow.

?Learn how to dance Salsa, Cha-Cha and Swing in "Bailando con las Pinguinas," hosted by Kappa Delta Chi in collaboration with NMSU's Dance Sport. The event will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the Corbett Center Outdoor Stage and free food will be served.

?A co-ed softball tournament will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Activity Center Fields. The tournament is hosted by Omega Delta Phi and pre-registration is required. Only full-time NMSU students will be allowed to participate.

"It's a nice balance of some educational and some fun events that will provide professional development for organizations running the events," Spencer said.

All events are free and open to the public. Team players in the sporting events must be NMSU full-time students and must be pre-registered as part of a team.
