NMSU horse judging team places well in Texas contests

The New Mexico State University horse judging team placed well in all divisions during two contests held in Texas in April.


The North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Contest was held April 17 in Stephenville, Texas. It was hosted by Tarleton State University.

The NMSU team won first overall at the competition. The team also placed first in the halter and reasons divisions, and placed third in the performance division.

In the halter division, Ari Wilbanks, of Moriarty, N.M., won first individually. Teammates Kaycee McDaniel, of Lovington, N.M.; Logan Potts, of Texico, N.M.; and Kali Benson, of Rio Rancho, N.M., placed fourth, seventh, and tenth, respectively.

McDaniel received eighth individually in the performance division.

In reasons, Potts placed second individually, followed by McDaniel. Wilbanks placed seventh and Benson received ninth.

McDaniel placed third overall individually, with Potts placing fourth, Wilbanks placing sixth and Benson placing seventh.

The second contest the team attended was the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) Spring Sweepstakes Collegiate Judging Contest held April 22 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The team received ninth in halter and eighth in performance and reasons. They also placed tenth overall.

McDaniel received 13th individually in the halter division and Potts placed eighth individually in reasons.
