NMSU's Space Development Foundation awards internships

The New Mexico State University Space Development Foundation has awarded seven summer internships to students to work in the personal and commercial spaceflight industry. Summer internships are designed to give students real-world experience working in the new and exciting commercial spaceflight revolution.

Students are placed with top business, government, and not-for-profit organizations to learn and participate on the ground floor of what may become the foundational enterprise of the 21st Century. All selected interns are awarded a $6,000 stipend and $500 for travel expenses for a 10-week internship.

Students receiving internships include:
1. Korey Hosack, enrolled at the University of New Mexico, will intern with Microgravity Enterprises
2. Keith Griego, enrolled at the University of New Mexico, will intern with Santa Fe Rocket Racing
3. Doug Weathers, enrolled at New Mexico State University, will intern with Spaceport America
4. Katharine Bailey, enrolled at Boston University, will intern with the National Space Society
5. Alexander Parker, enrolled at Pennsylvania State University, will intern with the Space Foundation
6. Barden Cleeland, enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will intern with the Personal Spaceflight Federation
7. Luke Davis, enrolled at the International Space University, will intern with Spaceport America

The NMSU Space Development Foundation received 48 applications from students across the nation and two applications from students studying abroad. Funding for this internship comes from proceeds of the annual International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS). ISPCS-2008 will be held Oct. 22-23, 2008 at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces.

The purpose of the NMSU Space Development Foundation is to support New Mexico State University through activities, programs, and educational and promotional opportunities related to the development of Spaceport America and emerging space commercialization efforts. The foundation:
?supports projects involved in identifying and promoting the opportunities and benefits of the new space economy;
?educates the general public about the progress and opportunities of the new space economy;
?nurtures development of new space businesses; and
?develops and encourages the new space leaders through awarding scholarships and internships.
