Artists awarded at NMSU Student Art Exhibition 2000

Winners of the annual New Mexico State University juried student art competition will display their work through April 9 at the Student Art Exhibition 2000 at NMSU's Art Gallery in Williams Hall.

"The show expresses the breadth and depth of excellence of NMSU art students," said Charles Lovell, director of the gallery. The exhibition features 108 works representing 63 student artists.

Jurors for this year's show were Peter Walch of the University of New Mexico Art Museum and Linda Tyler, director of Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque.

The $300 Best of Show award went to Ramon Jose Takamatsu for his pinhole photographs "Galactic Hydro Work" and "Mount Asphaldi." Evelyn Erhard received the Jurors' Award for Excellence for her oil and stencil "Circus," and oil and pastel "Band."

Ten jurors' cash awards were given to:
--Elaine Clance, $250, for her mixed media painting series "Simple Intimacy Three."
--Stacy Harms, $125, for her oil on canvas "Learning Solitude."
--Matthew Torres, $100, for his color photographs "9 to 5" and "Haircut."
--Frank Rimbach, $100, for his oil on canvas "Clown."
--Laura Morales, $100, for her mixed media sculpture "Lowrider Trike."
--Ramon Vasquez, $100, for his untitled oil painting.
--James Melendrez, $100, for his paper sculpture "Chair."
--Cassandra Lockwood, $100, for her mixed media sculpture "Dream Society."
--Ligia Ford, $100, for her two untitled ceramic sculptures.
--B.J. Coffman, $100, for his color photo No. 3 "Untitled Photogram," and "Drummer," an oil and charcoal on paper.
Amarylis Vargas received $100 credit at the Art Store, a Juror's Award and a $50 Cash Award of Merit for her No. 2 acrylic "The Artmaker Series."

Other cash award winners included:
--Travis McNiel, $75, New Mexico Studio of Design Award for his screen print "Monster I."
--Eliza Bethany, $75, Graphic Design Program Award for her silk screen print "Cenezoic Retablo."
--Sandra Hatfield, Award of Merit Gift Certificate for her oil painting "Innocent."
--Billy Pelzel, $60, Award for Design Excellence for his ink-jet digital print "Billy Made."

Students given a $50 Cash Award of Merit were Renea Hect for her steel and plaster sculpture "Nature's Tiara," Gordon Lawrie for his fine silver and jade "I See my Future Love," Chris Goodheart for his copper etching "City Limits," Jane Body for "Brooch to Help You Find Your Way" and Eric Brown for his ceramic sculpture "Surrealistic Strawberry."

Awards of Merit were given to Barbara Freeman, Elizabeth McGurr, Gabriel Calderon and Greg Fuqua. Honorable Mentions went to Britton Coalson, Sara Mills, Joe Thieman, Georjeanna Feltha, Collette Martinez, Caryl Porter, Luis Ortega, Kevin Jameson, Paula Fierro and Harry Zwibel.

The show and awards are funded by local businesses and individuals.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call the Art Gallery at (505) 646-2545.
