As interim director of government relations, Vargas will travel to Santa Fe with Ricardo Rel, the assistant vice president of government relations, to discuss the university with legislators.

"My job is like a two-way street," Vargas said. "I'll educate the legislature about NMSU, its priorities and how it serves the state and I'll educate the university on what the legislature is looking for. I'm a voice for the university's faculty and administration to the legislature."

Vargas previously worked in the office of governmental affairs for the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and is a licensed lawyer.

Vargas was born and raised in Las Cruces and attended Mayfield High School.

"I'm excited to be back in Las Cruces, where I grew up," Vargas said.

After graduating high school, Vargas went to the University of New Mexico, where he received both his bachelor's and law degrees.
