NMSU student government holding elections

The Associated Students of New Mexico State University is holding the fall 2006 student senate elections Nov.13-17. Voting polls for students opened on campus at 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, and will close at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17. Polls also may be accessed 24 hours a day at https://pulgita.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/vote.pl.

With 29 students running for positions in the student government senate, ASNMSU Chief Elections Officer Isaac Polanco said a good voter turnout is expected. Seven senatorial candidates are students within the Arts and Sciences College; three are from the College of Agriculture; five are from the College of Business; four from the College of Education; one from the College of Engineering; three from the College of Health and Social Services; and six students are from the Graduate College.

Polanco also said this year's theme for the election is "Data Driven Decisions" and with that, aggregate data from past ASNMSU elections has been taken into consideration during the planning of this year's election.

"By looking at voter trends we can cater better to students of all creeds and walks of life with data driven decisions," Polanco said.

There are several goals set forth by ASNMSU for this year's election: develop, expand and coordinate polling places according to election trends; create unique and innovative methods of informing students; and develop an action plan for the senate in a status report after the election.

ASNMSU also has a cumulative voter success electoral plan that consists of three parts: voter participation, alternative voting and advertisement. The plan calls for achievement of increased voter participation, technological accommodation for the voting process, and competent communication between ASNMSU and student voters.
